Find out which Wrexham pubs Rob McElhenney wants to visit first
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney say are looking forward to having a drink with the fans on their first trip to Wrexham after their takeover of the town’s football club.
The Hollywood A-listers who bought club in February are going to be at the Racecourse for the home match against Torquay over the weekend.
During an interview with Out Travel the System podcast, Rob revealed the first pub he’s planning to visit when he arrives in the town will either be the The Turf or the Fat Boar. He also said the first drink he’s going to order is a Wrexham Lager.
Their arrival in Wrexham will come after they made a surprise appearance at the team’s away game at Maidenhead last night when they lost 3-2 in a thrilling but disappointing encounter.
In recent weeks a new viewing platform for the duo – fitted with plush, padded seats – has been built into the Macron stand at the Racecourse.
In the days leading up to the game it’s expected they will visit a number of community initiatives.
During an interview this week on the Out Travel the System podcast, the duo revealed they were becoming in increasingly excited about watching their first match – but that they would be heading to the pub for a drink first.
Talking about his first trip to Wrexham, Deadpool star Ryan said: “I can only speak for me. I’m just super curious and excited to be a part of that community and to a certain degree immerse ourselves in it.
“We’ve always said we’re not here to drag Wrexham into our story we would like to be a part of Wrexham’s story.
“We’re not going to show up in some weird grandstanding tour of Wrexham. Rob and I both tend to be pretty low key.
“Our hope is…we were trying to take stewardship of the team, we would have hoped to be having a drink with many of the townsfolk that live there and many people in the community and those that have been part of the Wrexham Supporters’ Trust at that point.
“We have a lot of make-ups to do and it’s going to be exciting to be on the pitch at the Racecourse ground. I mean that’s it.”
‘Priorities’
But one of their first priorities when they arrive in Wrexham will be to go for a drink.
Rob, the star of Mythic Quest and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, said: “I believe my first stop when we get to Wrexham is going to be either The Turf pub or the Fat Boar which is also something I have been hearing and reading about quite a bit.
“I’m going to go in there and the first thing I am going to order is a Wrexham Lager. Then I will have a gin and tonic.”
“To me it’s all about the people,” said Ryan. I just want to go in there and know I can find people that can share my love for conversation, share my love for football and enjoy the fact that we’re just getting hammered.”
They also emphasised that they were deadly serious about securing success on the pitch.
Ryan added: “Our all-encompassing plan is just to win. That is it. At the end of the day that’s all that really matters.
“We have outfitted Phil Parkinson, who’s leading the team, in every way he’s asked …his asks are never unreasonable. We’re always looking for sustainability and value for the club.
“If Rob and I are hit by lightning tomorrow, the club still needs to be able to sustain itself so you can’t put your finger on a scale and say, ‘what do we need to do to get Messi here’. That’s not a long term strategy
“We feel we have outfitted the team to set it up for success. That also raises the stakes because if we’re not promoted that’s nerve-wracking.
“If we’re not promoted, not in the play-offs we’ve got to go back to the drawing board to re-examine how we’re approaching this.
“It’s exciting, it’s nerve-wracking. At the end of the day we are living for these matches.”
