Glamorgan thrash Somerset to end their Blast campaign
Glamorgan ended their Vitality Blast campaign in record-breaking fashion as Kiran Carlson’s magnificent century helped them to a crushing 120-run win over Somerset.
The Glamorgan captain’s hard-hitting 135 from 64 balls enabled the hosts to score the highest total of the 2024 blast with 243 for four before Somerset were skittled for 123.
Marnus Labuschagne’s 15-ball spell which returned figures of five for 11 – including a triple-wicket maiden – saw Somerset’s last seven wickets fall for just 35 runs.
Glamorgan’s win was in vain as they finished sixth in the South Group while Somerset have qualified for the quarter-finals.
The hosts, after electing to bat, scored 66 without loss from the first six overs while Carlson reached 50 from 28 deliveries.
Destructive
He enjoyed a destructive opening partnership of 169 with Will Smale and they both brought up major personal milestones in successive overs.
Carlson’s first century in T20s was followed by Smale’s first half-century in professional cricket, the latter including a ramp for six off Somerset seamer Riley Meredith despite two fielders being placed behind the wicketkeeper on the boundary.
The partnership eventually came to an end when Smale holed out to Sean Dickson at deep midwicket off Ben Green.
Colin Ingram’s partnership of 44 with the centurion kept the run rate flying before Carlson’s knock came to an end in the 18th over when he played Meredith up to Tom Abell at mid off.
Somerset’s unlikely pursuit began strongly with 25 coming from Dan Douthwaite in the second over. But Timm van der Gugten picked up the wickets of Tom Banton and Tom Kohler-Cadmore in consecutive deliveries in the third over.
Ben Kellaway picked up his first Blast wicket when George Thomas miscued the 20-year-old off-spinner to cover for 16.
Sean Dickson (12) and Tom Abell (29) both got starts before the introduction of Labuschagne into the bowling attack in his final Glamorgan match of 2024 brought a collapse.
