The incredible 80-year-old who is one of the fittest men in Wales

At 80 years old, Dr Peter Herbert, is proving that age is no barrier to elite athleticism.
A professor at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, the world-renowned fitness expert, academic, and lifelong athlete is preparing to take on one of the world’s toughest fitness challenges: HYROX – at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday 31st May 2025.
Dr. Herbert will be competing in the 80+ age category, setting a remarkable precedent in the world of HYROX. During training, he has already outperformed some athletes in the 70+ group, demonstrating not only exceptional fitness but also the power of determination and consistency. Despite having undergone a knee replacement, he has made only minor adjustments to his routine, and his performance continues to defy expectations. To date, he may just be the oldest known competitor to complete the full event – Dr Herbert is on track to raise the bar even higher.
He said: “If I’m able to complete this challenge, I hope it sends a clear message: that through a commitment to a healthy lifestyle and staying physically active, it’s absolutely possible to have the energy, strength, and resilience to enjoy activities that many believe are out of reach after fifty. Whether it’s surfing, mountain biking, rowing, swimming, or anything else that brings you joy, age doesn’t have to be a barrier — vitality is something we can choose to nurture every day.”
HYROX is a global fitness competition which combines functional strength exercises and endurance running/walking. It’s accessible for elite athletes and everyday fitness enthusiasts, making it one of the most inclusive and exciting events in the fitness world.

Known for its electric atmosphere and inclusive approach, HYROX challenges participants to complete 8 x 1-kilometre runs, each followed by a functional workout station. These include SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls.
A legend in the Welsh fitness community, Peter’s contributions span decades. As the former fitness coach for both the Welsh international rugby squad and the Scarlets, Peter has trained elite athletes at the highest level. He is also a world-record-holding Concept2 rower, most recently smashing the 100m rowing record on his 80th birthday by shaving off an astonishing 0.5 seconds.

Beyond his personal achievements, Dr Herbert has made academic contributions to sports science. His internationally recognised research focuses on high-intensity training for aging populations, with coverage in The Times and other national media.
His ongoing commitment to health, performance, and scientific research sets a powerful example of what is possible at any age.
