Rob McElhenney has told the American talk show host Jimmy Kimmel that walking on Wrexham AFC’s pitch is a “religious experience”.

The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor was asked about his visit to the club he co-owns with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, during a chat on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Jimmy Kimmel said: “Most people I think know this about you now co own a soccer team with Ryan Reynolds, or a football team, or a football club as they say, in Wales. Have you been over there to see the team and address the team?”

Rob replied: “We have yeah.”

Jimmy said: “How did that go?”

Rob said: “It was incredible. It’s absolutely incredible, yeah. I mean the way the town and the team have embraced us and the way that, I mean it’s just a, it’s a religious experience when you go an walk into this field that’s been there since 1802 it was originally built. They’ve been playing football there since 1864.

“So these organisations are older than anything we have in professional sports we have in this country”.

‘Doing better’

Jimmy asked: “And how is the team doing? Are they doing better since you took over?”

Rob replied: “We’re doing better yes. We’re hoping to be a little bit better than where we are now. We’re currently fourth in the table, but we’re about halfway through the season. So we’re thinking we’re going to make a big run in the second half of the season.”

Wrexham AFC again – a great club, but other Welsh clubs are still available. In fact we have a whole league of them called the Welsh Premiership that play at a similar standard to Wrexham. I also hear that we have a whole different game played with a funny shaped ball. Rarely hear about that one either on nation.cymru
