Cardiff City and Swansea City are today mourning the loss of their former manager Frank Burrows, who has died aged 77.

Burrows is the only Cardiff City manager to have won promotion twice with the Bluebirds in two different spells from 1986-1989 and 1998-2000.

In a four year spell at Swansea City between 1991-1995 he led them to victory in the 1994 Football League Trophy Final.

Solid bond

Burrows was a tough talking, no nonsense Scot, but his passionate demeanour and solid bond with the fans made the man in the distinctive flat cap a favourite at both Welsh clubs – no mean feat considering the rivalry between the two sides.

He was also a fans’ favourite at Portsmouth who he managed in two spells in the ’80s and ’90s.

Former South Wales Echo football reporter Terry Phillips reminisced about his at times stormy relationship with Burrows in this excellent piece for Dai Sport back in 2018, but still maintains that the Scot was his favourite manager in all his years reporting on the Bluebirds.

Death is always very hard, I’m afraid they had to say goodbye to him in the opening caskets. Because he was a good coach
