15 Apr 2021 3 minute read
Tafwyl at Cardiff Castle last year.

This year’s Tafwyl festival will take place next month and will be streamed online for the second successive year, due to Covid restriction.

Among the musicians performing are Geraint Jarman, Mared, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Ani Glass, Gwilym, and Breichiau Hir.

In total, fifteen bands will perform across three stages, curated by Clwb Ifor Bach and there will also be a performance by Breton band, EMEZI, through a partnership between Tafwyl and the Breton festival Gouel Broadel ar Brezhoneg (GBB).

The event will be streamed on the digital platform AM, live from the festival’s home at Cardiff Castle, hosted by presenters Huw Stephens, Seren Jones and Tara Bethan.

‘New beginning’

“After a quiet year, I’m really looking forward to returning to the castle to play at this year’s festival,” Ani Glass said. “It will be a great opportunity to say goodbye to a difficult time and celebrate a new beginning for us all.”

As well as the live music the festival will host the launch of the first LGBTQ+ Welsh language podcast, ‘Esgusodwch Fi?’

For the younger audience there will be a range of workshops including TikTok, make-up, cooking, and dancing and the chance to take part in a rugby workshop with the Cardiff Blues.

Pupils from Cardiff’s 17 Welsh medium schools will also come together for a special online performance led by the Welsh of the West End.

Some of the festival’s fringe events will kick off on 8 May, with one of the main events – Mind Cymru’s charity gig with Eden – taking place on Friday 14 May.

On Saturday 15 May, all the events will be streamed live between 10am and 9pm on AM and there will be an opportunity to enjoy the festival’s highlights on S4C at 8pm on 13 June.

Tafwyl is organized by Menter Caerdydd, a charity that promotes the social use of the Welsh language in Cardiff and is being staged for the 15th time. The first Tafwyl took place in the Mochyn Du pub car park in 2006 in front of a few hundred people.

In 2019 the festival attracted a crowd of over 40,000 to Cardiff Castle.

The full music line-up for Tafwyl 2021 is: Geraint Jarman, Eden, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Ani Glass, Gwilym, Lewys, Plu, Breichiau Hir, Eädyth, Mared, Glain Rhys, Bwncath, Papur Wal, Derw, Thallo, Mali Hȃf, EMEZI, DJs Ffion Wyn + Trishna Jaikara ‘Ladies of Rage’, DJ Gareth Potter.
